Frances Ferruccio (center) and friends in Long Island City, circa 1925.
This photo is one of my favorites—not just for its stylish charm but because the woman in the center is my grandmother. Taken when she was 25, it offers me a glimpse into her carefree days—a time when she wasn’t yet a wife or mother, but a vibrant young woman living her own story.
The photograph was taken in Long Island City, New York, in the mid 1920s. What fascinates me most is that the glamorous fur coats might have been provided by the street photographer—a clever way to add sophistication to an affordable portrait. For my grandmother and her friends, this photo was likely a treasured keepsake, capturing them at their best.
The group in the photograph is clearly out for a special occasion, as evidenced by the formal attire they are wearing underneath the props provided by the street photographer. The carefully chosen dresses suggest a deliberate effort to dress their best for the day. Adding to the charm, my grandmother can be seen holding her own hat, which she had worn before donning the cloche provided by the photographer.
Back then, photography wasn’t casual; it was deliberate. Each photo required effort, and every image was precious. This wasn’t just a snapshot—it was a moment frozen in time, a reflection of pride and friendship. Looking at it now, I see more than a fashionable group of women. I see my grandmother’s youth, confidence, and spirit preserved forever.
